A field guide for climbing Colorado's 14,000-foot peaks
The mountain doesn't care how fit you are at sea level.
Altitude changes how you breathe, eat, sleep, and heal. Most people find that out on the trail. Here's how to find out five days early instead — hydration, nutrition, the real warning signs, and what the weather is actually going to do to you.

Before you ever fly out
Train your legs and lungs, not just your willpower
Nutrition and hydration only get you so far if your body has never carried a pack uphill for hours. Start building this two to four months out, not two weeks out.
- Cardio base, 3–4x a week. Hiking, stair climbing, incline treadmill, or cycling — anything that keeps your heart rate up for 45+ minutes builds the endurance a summit day actually demands.
- Weighted pack hikes. Once a week, hike with the pack weight you'll actually carry. Nothing exposes a bad boot or a bad plan faster than a loaded pack on a real incline.
- Leg strength, twice a week. Squats, lunges, step-ups, and calf work. Downhill is what wrecks untrained knees, not the climb up.
- Practice your gear before you need it. Break in boots, test your layering system, and know how your pack fits — not for the first time at 12,000 feet.

Why altitude changes the rules
Most of Colorado's summit trailheads already sit higher than the tallest peaks in the eastern half of the country. By the time you're above treeline, your body is working with noticeably less oxygen, far less humidity, and much stronger sun than it's used to.
Air pressure drops with elevation, so every breath at 12,000 ft delivers meaningfully less oxygen than the same breath at home — regardless of your fitness level.
UV exposure increases roughly 4% for every 1,000 feet of elevation gain — meaning sun intensity above 10,000 ft can run 20%+ higher than at sea level.
Colorado's dry, low-humidity air pulls moisture out of your body and skin far faster than you're used to — most people need roughly double their normal water intake.
The prep timeline
Two phases, one goal: don't arrive already behind
This is the same rhythm I walk every climber through before a summit — from first-timers to the people standing next to me on the ridge. Start Phase 1 about five days out. Phase 2 begins the moment you land.
Phase 1 — The 5-Day Build-Up
Starting five days before you leave home
The goal isn't to train harder this week — it's to build fluid volume and top off your glycogen stores before you ever get on a plane. Keep meals simple, home-cooked, and boring on purpose.
Breakfast
- Oatmeal with water or low-fat milk, sliced banana, a pinch of cinnamon
Lunch
- Turkey and swiss on whole wheat, with pre-cut fruit on the side
Dinner
- Baked chicken, plain baked potato (great for potassium), steamed broccoli or green beans
Phase 2 — Arrival & Your First 48 Hours
The moment you land at elevation
Digestion slows down significantly above 9,000 feet. A heavy meal diverts oxygen away from your brain and muscles toward your stomach — which is exactly how people end up with nausea, headaches, or crushing fatigue on day one. Keep everything light, warm, and carb-forward.
Breakfast
- Flavored instant oatmeal — easy to digest, warm, complex carbs
- Light scrambled eggs and toast (skip the heavy butter or cream)
- Bananas and berries for potassium and stable blood sugar
Lunch
- Low-sodium soup — lentil, chicken noodle, or vegetable broth
- Egg salad wraps on soft whole-wheat tortillas
Dinner
- Pasta marinara — skip the heavy cream or meat sauces
- Stuffed sweet potato with black beans, corn, and a little cheese
- Plain rotisserie chicken with rice and carrots, in small portions
Keep on hand at all times: whole-wheat crackers, graham crackers or fig bars, applesauce pouches for a fast sugar boost if you feel dizzy, and electrolyte packets mixed into your water bottle.
Hydration & electrolytes
Drink more than feels reasonable
Colorado's air holds a fraction of the humidity most people are used to, and you lose moisture with every breath at altitude — not just through sweat. Most climbers need roughly double their normal water intake just to break even.
- Target 100–130 oz of water a day in the days leading up to your climb, and keep it steady through the trip — not just on summit day.
- Add electrolytes or a pinch of sea salt to your morning water. It's not optional flavoring — it helps your body actually hold onto the fluid instead of flushing it straight through.
- Carry a real water bottle, not a single-use one. You'll be refilling constantly, and you'll want something you can dump electrolyte packets into.
- CutAlcohol — eliminate it completely in the days before and during your trip. It dehydrates you, wrecks your sleep, and mimics or worsens altitude symptoms like headaches and dizziness.
- LimitCaffeine to your normal baseline. It's a diuretic — it accelerates fluid loss, raises your heart rate, and can make altitude-related insomnia worse.
- ReduceHigh-sodium foods — processed meals, canned soups, salty snacks. Excess sodium throws off your fluid balance and raises your risk of swelling in the hands and feet.
- ReduceHeavy, fatty, or fried foods. Digestion already slows at altitude — a greasy meal sits like a rock and often turns into nausea or bloating.
Nutrition at altitude
Eat like you're recovering, not training
The instinct is to carb-load like it's race week. What actually works is lighter, warmer, more frequent meals that don't ask your stomach to compete with your lungs for oxygen.
- DoFavor warm, simple carbohydrates — oatmeal, rice, pasta, baked potatoes. They're easy to digest and keep your glycogen stores topped off.
- DoSnack constantly rather than eating three large meals. Whole-wheat crackers, fig bars, and applesauce pouches are easy on the stomach and quick to digest.
- DoLean on potassium-rich foods — bananas, potatoes, sweet potatoes — to help offset fluid shifts.
- DoKeep portions smaller and more frequent for the first 48 hours at elevation, even if your appetite says otherwise.
Know before you go
The warning signs everyone should know
Altitude sickness has nothing to do with how fit you are — it comes down to how well your body adjusts to lower oxygen, and that varies person to person. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is the mildest and most common form, and it's almost always manageable if you catch it early.
Common AMS symptoms
Symptoms usually show up within the first day at elevation. If you notice them, the response is simple: stop ascending, rest, hydrate, and don't push higher until they pass. Symptoms that get worse rather than better — confusion, trouble walking, shortness of breath at rest — are a sign to descend and get medical attention, not push through.

Skin & sun
Your skin feels the altitude too
Low humidity pulls moisture straight out of your skin, and UV exposure climbs roughly 4% for every 1,000 feet you gain — which means you can burn badly on a cool, overcast day above treeline.
- Apply SPF 30+ before you leave the trailhead and reapply every two hours — clouds don't block UV at altitude the way they do at sea level.
- Cover up: a hat and sunglasses do more than sunscreen alone, especially above treeline where there's zero shade.
- Moisturize morning and night in the days before your trip — look for hyaluronic acid or ceramides, which help your skin hold onto water instead of losing it to the dry air.
- Skip the hot shower the night before a climb. Hot water strips natural oils your skin needs in dry conditions.
- Pack lip balm with SPF — lips crack fast at altitude and it's the easiest thing to forget.
Sleep at altitude
Bad sleep isn't just annoying — it's a symptom
Trouble sleeping is one of the most common early signs of altitude adjustment, not a separate problem. A few nights of lighter, more broken sleep the first time you're above 8,000 feet is normal.
- Skip alcohol and sleep aids at elevation — both can suppress your breathing rate, which is the opposite of what your body needs while it adjusts.
- Follow "climb high, sleep low" when you have the option — spending your lowest hours of the day at a slightly lower elevation than your highest point helps your body catch up.
- Keep the electrolyte habit going into the evening — mild dehydration headaches are notorious for waking people up at 2 a.m. at altitude.
- Give yourself an easy first night. If you can, avoid scheduling your hardest push on night one at a new elevation.
What to expect
Colorado's high country runs on its own clock
The mountains don't follow the forecast for the town below them. Conditions change fast, afternoons bring lightning, and the season shapes everything from your start time to your layers.
June
Early summer, ideal conditions, lingering snowfields on shaded routes.
July
Peak summer, warm mornings, but the most reliable afternoon storms of the year.
August
Late summer — monsoon season. Early starts matter more than any other month.
September
Fall color, crisp air, some of the most stable weather windows of the year.
October
Late season — cold starts, possible early snow, shorter daylight.
November
Meteorological winter conditions. Rugged, technical, and not for a first attempt.
The rule of thumb every guide will give you: be off the summit before noon. Colorado's afternoon thunderstorms build fast and give you very little warning above treeline, where there's nowhere to take cover.

Common questions before a first summit
- AcclimateHow long does it take to acclimate? At least one full day at elevation before a strenuous push — two to three days is better for a first attempt.
- BeginnersCan a beginner climb a 14er? Many Class 1–2 routes are achievable for a reasonably fit beginner with proper acclimatization and an early start. Class 3–4 routes call for experience or a guide.
- FitnessDoes fitness prevent altitude sickness? No — it doesn't reliably predict who gets AMS. Hydration, gradual ascent, and pacing matter more.
- Start timeWhat time should I start? Between 3 and 5 a.m., so you're off the summit before early afternoon storms build.
- Best monthWhat's the best month to climb? Late June through September, with July–August carrying the highest monsoon storm risk.
